Collectie documenten afkomstig van en verzameld door Theodoor Paul Galestin (1907-1980), hoogleraar in de archeologie en kunstgeschiedenis van Zuid- en Zuidoost-Azië in Leiden, met een grote nadruk op materiaal uit Indonesië: afschriften van Javaanse en Balinese handschriften, drukwerken, foto’s, tekeningen en grafiek. Bijzonder zijn de brieven en tekeningen van de schilder en musicus Walter Spies, een album foto's van o.a. Woodbury en Page en van Isidore van Kinsbergen, en de documentatie over de moderne Indonesische schilderkunst op Java en Bali.

Collection of documents from or gathered by Theodoor Paul Galestin (1907-1980), professor in archaeology and art history of South and South-East Asia in Leiden, primarily with materials from Indonesia: copies of Javanese and Balinese manuscripts, prints, photographs, drawings and graphic materials. Especially noteworthy are the letters and drawings of the painter and musician Walter Spies, a collection of photographs by, amongst others, Woodbury and Page and by Isidore van Kinsbergen, and the documentation on modern Indonesian painting in Java and Bali.

De collectie geschonken door Daisy Spies (1905-2000), de jongste zuster van de schilder, musicus en fotograaf Walter Spies (1895-1942), bestaat hoofdzakelijk uit foto’s waarvan het merendeel door of van de kunstenaar op Bali zijn gemaakt en uit enkele tekeningen van zijn hand.

The collection donated by Daisy Spies (1905-2000), the youngest sister of the painter, musician and photographer Walter Spies (1895-1942), contains mostly photographs, by or with relevance to Walter Spies, and some drawings by the latter’s hand.
Three watercolours by Walter Spies, of marine animals, c. 1939-1940
The collection Daisy Spies consists mainly of photographs related to Walter Spies. Except two portraits of young Walter Spies taken in Moscow in the late 1900’s, the photographs record his life in Java and Bali after 1923 and in the 1930’s. Many photographs were made by the artist himself, and the most part of the collection bear captions in his hand. Further there are three watercolours of marine animals by Walter Spies. The last part of the collection consists of paper clippings containing articles on Walter Spies published in the 1950’s and 1960’s.

De collectie oorspronkelijk afkomstig van Marianne van der Sleen-van Wessem (1892-1980), op Bali bevriend met de Duitse schilder, musicus en fotograaf Walter Spies (1895-1942), bestaat hoofdzakelijk uit documenten die betrekking hebben op deze kunstenaar en Bali kenner en op Balinese beeldende en uitvoerende kunsten. Originele foto’s en enkele tekeningen van Walter Spies behoren tot deze collectie.

The collection which originally belonged to Marianne van der Sleen-van Wessem (1892-1980), close friend in Bali of the German painter, musician and photographer Walter Spies (1895-1942), consists mainly of documents pertaining to this artist and Bali expert and to Balinese plastic and performing arts. Original photographs and drawings by Walter Spies are part of the collection as well.

Collection of the Walter Spies Foundation Holland
Met uitzondering van originele brieven en een schilderij van Walter Spies dat rechtstreeks aan de Stichting Walter Spies Holland werd geschonken is de collectie bijeengebracht en nagelaten aan de stichting door Hans Rhodius (1912-1988), maecenas en eerste biograaf van Walter Spies (1895-1942). Rhodius’ archief omvat hoofdzakelijk zijn omvangrijke briefwisseling, handgeschreven en gedrukte documentatie, foto’s, geluidsopnamen en films met betrekking tot Walter Spies en Balinese beeldende en uitvoerende kunsten alsmede fotokopieën van brieven van en aan Walter Spies.

With the exception of original letters and a painting by Walter Spies (1895-1942), the core of the loan collection was brought together by Hans Rhodius (1912-1988), patron of the arts, first biographer of Walter Spies, and founder of the Walter Spies Foundation. Rhodius’ archives, donated to the Foundation, consist mainly of his extensive correspondence, manuscript and printed documents, photographs, recordings and films related to Walter Spies and Balinese visual and performing arts, and photocopies of letters by and addressed to Walter Spies.
Zoological drawings (watercolours) by Walter Spies, 1938-1940
The collection includes original photographs and watercolours by Walter Spies, the famous German born painter, musician, photographer and Bali expert.
Walter Spies was born in Moscow 1895 and died 19 January 1942 on the sinking ship the ‘von Imhoff’, on its way to British India. Spies was active in Java from 1923 and in Bali from 1927 until his internment in May 1940 by the Dutch authorities, due to his German citizenship. The collection consists further of photographs, correspondence, manuscript and printed documentation in relation to Walter Spies and to Mrs Van Wessem curatorship at the Bali Museum in Denpasar.
The collection was registered in 1999 under the classmark Or. 25.188.
