De inhoud behelst interviews met oud-bestuursambtenaren over de periode 1940-1950, de slotfase van het Nederlandse gezag in de Indonesische archipel. Het onderzoek was hoofdzakelijk gericht op de Binnenlands Bestuur-ambtenaren die destijds waren tewerkgesteld op Java, een gebied waar de onafhankelijkheidsstrijd zich in alle hevigheid afspeelde.

The Zijlmans Archive is formed during the doctoral research of Govert Cornelis Zijlmans (1950- ). The content includes interviews with former government officials over the period of 1940-1950. This research focused mainly on the Interior administration officials who were then employed on Java.
