Verzameling van ca. 4.000 Arabische handschriften uit de 9e tot en met de 20e eeuw. De kern van de collectie bestaat uit de nalatenschap van Levinus Warner (1619-1665), oriëntalist en diplomaat. De gehele Leidse collectie staat nog steeds bekend onder de naam ‘Legatum Warnerianum’ (Warners nalatenschap), hoewel zowel voor als na Warner vele geleerden de collectie hebben uitgebouwd. De collectie omvat het gehele spectrum van het geschreven Arabische erfgoed.

Collection of c. 4,000 Arabic manuscripts dating from the 9th till the 20th century. The core of the collection consists of the legacy of Levinus Warner (1619-1665), Orientalist and diplomat, after whom the entire Leiden collection is still known as ‘Legatum Warnerianum’ (Warner’s Legacy). However, many scholars before and after him have contributed to its growth. The collection covers the entire range of the Arabic written heritage.

De Arabische handschriftencollectie van Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936), adviseur van het koloniale gouvernement van Nederlands-Indië en de Nederlandse regering van 1889 tot zijn dood in 1936, en hoogleraar Arabisch aan de Universiteit Leiden van 1907 tot 1927. Veel handschriften hebben betrekking op islamitische onderwerpen, en de meeste zijn afkomstig uit Indonesië, met verspreide items uit het Arabisch Schiereiland (Hedjaz, Jemen).

The Arabic manuscript collection of Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936), advisor to the colonial administration of the Netherlands East Indies and the government of the Netherlands from 1889 until his death in 1936, and professor of Arabic at Leiden University from 1907 until 1927. Many manuscripts are devoted to Islamic subjects, and most are from Indonesia, with dispersed items from the Arabian Peninsula (Hejaz, Yemen).

Verzameling van gedrukten, oosterse handschriften, ego-documenten, foto’s en vroege geluidsopnamen van Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936), Nederlands meest prominente oriëntalist uit de late 19e eeuw en vroege 20e eeuw. Hij is vooral bekend vanwege zijn reis naar Mekka in 1884-1885 en de daaruit volgende publicatie Mekka (1888-1889). Van 1889 tot 1906 diende hij als adviseur voor inlandse zaken van het Gouvernement van Nederlandsch-Indië. Bij zijn terugkeer in Nederland in 1906 volgde hij M.J. de Goeje op als hoogleraar Arabisch in Leiden.

Collection of printed books, Oriental manuscripts, private papers, photographs and early sound recordings of Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936), the Netherlands’ most prominent Orientalist of the late 19th and early 20th century. He is mostly known for his journey to Mecca in 1884-1885 and his ensuing publication Mekka (1888-1889). From 1889 to 1906 he served as advisor on indigenous affairs to the Government of the Netherlands East Indies. Upon his return to the Netherlands in 1906 he succeeded M.J. de Goeje as professor of Arabic at Leiden University.

Een deel van het archief van Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936), islamoloog en arabist, adviseur van het Gouvernement van Nederlands-Indië (1889-1906) en hoogleraar Arabisch in Leiden (1906-1927). Het archief bevat brieven, politieke dossiers en andere documenten, typoscripten van voordrachten en publicaties en materiaal m.b.t. congressen en lidmaatschap van wetenschappelijke instituten.
