Abstract in Dutch

De particuliere verzamelaar G.A. Edwards (1947) heeft gedurende tientallen jaren foto’s uit Zuidoost-Azië verworven via onder andere veilingen en handelaren. Een deel van zijn verzameling is door de Universitaire Bibliotheken Leiden verworven en bevat foto’s uit Zuidoost-Azië.

G.A. Edwards (1947), private collector, has acquired photos for decades through auctions and dealers, among others. Part of his collection was acquired by Leiden University Libraries and contains photographs from Southeast Asia.

De collectie C.J. Grader is het persoonlijk archief van een in Leiden opgeleide econoom en Indoloog. Als bestuursambtenaar heeft Grader carrière gemaakt in Nederlands-Indië (Bali, Java, Madura) tot aan de Japanse invasie en in Indonesië tijdens de eerste woelige jaren na haar onafhankelijkheid. Voorts weerspiegelt het archief Graders verdere loopbaan in Nederland (Amsterdam, Wageningen) tot aan zijn pensionering in 1971. Zijn omvangrijke correspondentie bestrijkt niet alleen zijn loopbaanjaren maar ook de periode na zijn pensionering.

The collection C.J. Grader consists of the private papers of an economist and indologist trained at Leiden University. Grader spent his career as a civil servant in the Dutch East Indies (Bali, Java, Madura) until the Japanese invasion, and in Indonesia during de first turbulent years after its independence. Furthermore, Grader’s papers reflect his scholarly career in the Netherlands (Amsterdam, Wageningen) until his retirement in 1971. The voluminous correspondence covers Grader’s entire active worklife and the years following his retirement.

Zij omvatten correspondentie, aantekeningen, verslagen, adviezen en beschrijvingen van Nahuys’ eigen bestuurlijke en militaire activiteiten (1805-1831, 1836-1839), alsmede een verzameling brieven, resoluties en overige officiële archiefstukken (originelen, afschriften en uittreksels), die betrekking hebben op de jaren 1741-1804, vóór Nahuys’ aankomst in Indië. De collectie afkomstig van de bibliotheek van het Nederlands Bijbelgenootschap omvat ca. 750 handschriften in het Maleis, Javaans, Soendanees, Boeginees, Makassaars en Arabisch. De handschriften werden op Java, Sumatra en Zuid-Celebes verzameld door de taalkundigen J.F.C. Gericke (1799- 1857), C.J. van der Vlis (1813-1842), W.H. Engelmann (1836-1868), B. F. Matthes (1818-1908) en H.C. Klinkert (1829-1913), afgevaardigden van het Nederlands Bijbelgenootschap in de jaren 1828-1879.

The collection from the Netherlands Bible Society consists of c. 750 manuscripts in Malay, Javanese, Sundanese, Buginese, Makassarese and Arabic. These manuscripts were brought together during the years 1828-1879 in Java, Sumatra and South Celebes by the scholars J.F.C. Gericke (1799-1857), C.J. van der Vlis (1813-1842), W.H. Engelmann (1836-1868), B. F. Matthes (1818-1908) and H.C. Klinkert (1829-1913), who were acting as representatives of the Netherlands Bible Society.

De collectie van de Duitse fotograaf Adolph Schaefer omvat 124 daguerreotypieën van archeologische oudheden op Java. Schaefer maakte deze foto’s in 1845 in opdracht van het Nederlandse Ministerie van Koloniën. Het is de grootste samenhangende collectie daguerreotypieën in Nederland.

The collection of the German photographer Adolph Schaefer contains 124 daguerreotypes of archeological antiquities on Java. Schaefer made these photographs in 1845 commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Colonies. It is the largest coherent collection of daguerreotypes in the Netherlands.

De collectie geschonken door Daisy Spies (1905-2000), de jongste zuster van de schilder, musicus en fotograaf Walter Spies (1895-1942), bestaat hoofdzakelijk uit foto’s waarvan het merendeel door of van de kunstenaar op Bali zijn gemaakt en uit enkele tekeningen van zijn hand.

The collection which originally belonged to Marianne van der Sleen-van Wessem (1892-1980), close friend in Bali of the German painter, musician and photographer Walter Spies (1895-1942), consists mainly of documents pertaining to this artist and Bali expert and to Balinese plastic and performing arts. Original photographs and drawings by Walter Spies are part of the collection as well.
