Abstract in Dutch

De collectie bijeengebracht door professor C.C. Berg (1900-1990) omvat hoofdzakelijk teksten op palmblad en papier in Javaans, Oudjavaans (Kawi), Javaans-Balinees en Balinees. De teksten en overige documenten weerspiegelen het onderzoeksveld en het professoraat van een geleerde die zijn leven, hetzij op Java, hetzij aan de Leidse Universiteit, grotendeels aan de Javaanse taal, literatuur en cultuur heeft gewijd.

Abstract in English

The collection brought together by Professor C.C. Berg (1900-1990) contains essentially texts on palmleaf and paper in Javanese, Old Javanese (Kawi), Javanese-Balinese and Balinese. The texts and other documents reflect the research field of a scholar and professor who dedicated most of his active life to the Javanese language, literature and culture either in Java or in Leiden.

Abstract in Dutch De papieren gevormd en bijeengebracht door Huibert Gerard baron Nahuys van Burgst (1782-1858), militair en Oost-Indisch ambtenaar, betreffen de meest uiteenlopende aspecten van het koloniaal en inheems bestuur en maatschappij van Nederlands-Indië vanaf 1741 tot 1852, en in het bijzonder de periode 1804-1839. Zij omvatten correspondentie, aantekeningen, verslagen, adviezen en beschrijvingen van Nahuys’ eigen bestuurlijke en militaire activiteiten (1805-1831, 1836-1839), alsmede een verzameling brieven, resoluties en overige officiële archiefstukken (originelen, afschriften en uittreksels), die betrekking hebben op de jaren 1741-1804, vóór Nahuys’ aankomst in Indië. De collectie afkomstig van de bibliotheek van het Nederlands Bijbelgenootschap omvat ca. 750 handschriften in het Maleis, Javaans, Soendanees, Boeginees, Makassaars en Arabisch. De handschriften werden op Java, Sumatra en Zuid-Celebes verzameld door de taalkundigen J.F.C. Gericke (1799- 1857), C.J. van der Vlis (1813-1842), W.H. Engelmann (1836-1868), B. F. Matthes (1818-1908) en H.C. Klinkert (1829-1913), afgevaardigden van het Nederlands Bijbelgenootschap in de jaren 1828-1879.

Abstract in English

The collection from the Netherlands Bible Society consists of c. 750 manuscripts in Malay, Javanese, Sundanese, Buginese, Makassarese and Arabic. These manuscripts were brought together during the years 1828-1879 in Java, Sumatra and South Celebes by the scholars J.F.C. Gericke (1799-1857), C.J. van der Vlis (1813-1842), W.H. Engelmann (1836-1868), B. F. Matthes (1818-1908) and H.C. Klinkert (1829-1913), who were acting as representatives of the Netherlands Bible Society.

Verzameling van gedrukten, oosterse handschriften, ego-documenten, foto’s en vroege geluidsopnamen van Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936), Nederlands meest prominente oriëntalist uit de late 19e eeuw en vroege 20e eeuw. Hij is vooral bekend vanwege zijn reis naar Mekka in 1884-1885 en de daaruit volgende publicatie Mekka (1888-1889). Van 1889 tot 1906 diende hij als adviseur voor inlandse zaken van het Gouvernement van Nederlandsch-Indië. Bij zijn terugkeer in Nederland in 1906 volgde hij M.J. de Goeje op als hoogleraar Arabisch in Leiden.

Collection of printed books, Oriental manuscripts, private papers, photographs and early sound recordings of Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936), the Netherlands’ most prominent Orientalist of the late 19th and early 20th century. He is mostly known for his journey to Mecca in 1884-1885 and his ensuing publication Mekka (1888-1889). From 1889 to 1906 he served as advisor on indigenous affairs to the Government of the Netherlands East Indies. Upon his return to the Netherlands in 1906 he succeeded M.J. de Goeje as professor of Arabic at Leiden University.
