Verzameling 19e- en vroeg 20e-eeuwse vooral populaire vormen van fotografie, bijeengebracht door de Amsterdamse boekhandelaar Maurits Muller Massis, waaronder portret-, familie-, reis- en koloniale fotografie, objecten zoals albums en fotografica zoals camera’s, studio- en doka-toebehoren.

Collection, gathered by the Amsterdam based book dealer Maurits Muller Massis, of 19th and early 20th-century, mainly vernacular photography, among which portrait-, family-, travel- and colonial photography, objects such as albums and photographic technology such as cameras, studio and dark room accessories.

Op 2 maart 1910 nam de Nederlandsche Amateur Fotografen Vereeniging (NAFV; 1887- )) als eerste in Nederland het initiatief tot het aanleggen van een museale collectie foto’s en fotografica die de grondslag moest vormen voor een fotografisch museum. De collectie werd uitgebouwd door middel van schenkingen.

On 2 March, 1910, the Nederlandsche Amateur Fotografen Vereeniging (NAFV; 1887- ) became the first institution in The Netherlands to take steps toward establishing a museal photography collection of photographs and photographica, which was to be the foundation for a photographic museum. The collection was expanded through gifts.

Carel Tirion (1905-1993) was een fotograaf die zijn vakkennis in dienst stelde van wetenschappelijke fotografie en onderwijs. Zijn opdrachten noodzaakten hem diverse fototechnische instrumenten en methoden te ontwikkelen. Tevens was hij als een van de leidende personen verantwoordelijk voor het opzetten en ontwikkelen van het Nederlandse fotovakonderwijs.

Photographer Carel Tirion (1905-1993) served with his professional knowledge the scientific photography and education. His commissioned work challenged him to be inventive and he developed various phototechnical instruments and methods. Tirion was also responsable for the creation and development of photography education in the Netherlands.
