Custodial History
After the death of Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje in 1936 his archive remained in the possession of his widow, Ida Maria Snouck Hurgronje-Oort (1873-1958). During the Second World War, part of the archive was transferred for security reasons to his former home at Rapenburg 61, Leiden. Not long before the death of Snouck Hurgronje’s widow her daughter Christien Liefrinck-Snouck Hurgronje (1914-) arranged for the correspondence to be donated to Leiden University Library in 1956. This correspondence is now preserved in Or. 8952 A-B (see the separate collection guide). In 1980, part of the archive which was then still kept at Rapenburg 61 was transferred to Leiden University Library and added to the general correspondence files, although it did only partly contain letters. These additions were registered under Or. 8952 with the remark ‘Nagekomen 1980’ (added 1980). At least part of the additions were regarded as subject to the embargo which expired on January 1st, 1997.
