Custodial History

Or. 12.288, sections A-L, were separated from Or. 8952 in 1969 by the curator P.S. van Koningsveld. The collections have been arranged in 16 sections, indicated by a letter (A-P). The sections, now numbered as Or. 12.288: A-L, were taken out of this legacy on 29 September 1969 by P.S. van Koningsveld, the then curator, and registered under the present class-mark Or. 12.288. A short inventory list by Van Koningsveld is included in Or. 12.288 A.

The section now numbered as Or. 12.288: M was found in June 1999 in the collection of letters (Or. 8952), with the letter of D.G.W. van Voorthuijsen, and placed under the same class-mark as the other photographs.

The section Or. 12.288: N-P was found in the library before 1983 and was also placed under the same classmark as the other photographs.

Or. 18.097 and Or. 18.098 were transferred in 1980 or shortly afterwards to the Leiden University Library as a gift of the Foundation 'Het Oosters Instituut' after it had been kept for many years in the attic of the Snouck Hurgronje house, Rapenburg 61, in Leiden, and was registered in the Library in June 1983. A typescript inventory of the contents of Or. 18.097 was prepared by F.G.P. Jaquet.

Processing Information

The photographs in Or. 12.288 were stored in 1969 or 1970 in a cardboard map containing eight envelopes and one album, each containing different numbers of photographs of different sizes.

In the early 2000s the photographs were packed in new Secol sleeves and boxed in a project carried out by Ms Dirry Oostdam under the supervision of curator Jan Just Witkam. In 2004 they organised a special exhibition of the photographs under the title West-Arabian encounters. Fifty years of Dutch-Arabian relations in images (1885-1935), with catalogue.

The materials in Or. 18.097 and Or. 18.098 were repacked in the 1980s, but no inventory was made apart from the typescript list by F.G.P. Jaquet.

The archive was restored, repacked, digitised and catalogued between 2011 and 2013 with funding from Metamorfoze, a national conservation and digitisation project co-ordinated by the Royal Library, The Hague, with additional financial support from Familefonds Hurgronje (Middelburg) and various persons related to Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje.
