Biographical / Historical

Frederik Kaiser (1808-1872) was appointed 'Verificateur van ‘s Rijks Zeeinstrumenten' (controller of Navy chronometers and compasses) in 1858. After his death, this function was separated from the directorate of the Observatory. The verification office was relocated several times, and merged with other organisations into the Marine Elektronisch en Optisch Bedrijf (MEOB).

Documents regarding Frederik Kaiser’s work as 'Verificateur van ‘s Rijks Zeeinstrumenten' (controller of Navy chronometers and compasses). Frederik Kaiser was professor of astronomy at Leiden University and director of Leiden Observatory (1837-1872).

Custodial History

Kaiser’s son P.J. Kaiser, who succeeded his father as 'Verificateur', separated these papers from the rest of Kaiser’s archive, and kept them at the Verification Office. After various mergers and reorganisations, this office became part of the Marine Elektronisch en Optisch Bedrijf.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The scans were made by agreement with the Netherlands Institute of Military History in The Hague.

The originals of these papers are kept at the Netherlands Institute of Military History (NIMH) in The Hague. By agreement between the NIMH and the University Library, scans of the papers were added to the digital collections of the library.
