De collectie bijeengebracht door professor C.C. Berg (1900-1990) omvat hoofdzakelijk teksten op palmblad en papier in Javaans, Oudjavaans (Kawi), Javaans-Balinees en Balinees. De teksten en overige documenten weerspiegelen het onderzoeksveld en het professoraat van een geleerde die zijn leven, hetzij op Java, hetzij aan de Leidse Universiteit, grotendeels aan de Javaanse taal, literatuur en cultuur heeft gewijd.

The collection brought together by Professor C.C. Berg (1900-1990) contains essentially texts on palmleaf and paper in Javanese, Old Javanese (Kawi), Javanese-Balinese and Balinese. The texts and other documents reflect the research field of a scholar and professor who dedicated most of his active life to the Javanese language, literature and culture either in Java or in Leiden.

De BNM verzamelt en presenteert gegevens over middeleeuwse handschriften uit de Nederlanden (waar ook ter wereld bewaard), in het bijzonder gegevens over de Middelnederlandse teksten en hun auteurs, over de personen betrokken bij de handschriftproductie en over de bezitters van handschriften, vanaf de Middeleeuwen tot op heden. De BNM bestaat uit mappen met beschrijvingen en afschriften, foto's en bandwrijfsels, alsmede indices in de vorm van kaartenbakken. Een groot deel van de papieren documentatie is toegankelijk via een database.

The Bibliotheca Neerlandica Manuscripta (BNM) collects and makes available information on medieval manuscripts produced in the Netherlands. The main focus is on Middle Dutch texts and its authors, on the individuals and institutions that were involved in manuscript production (scribes, illuminators, monasteries) and on the former and present owners of manuscripts. The BNM consists of folders with descriptions and transcripts, photographs, rubbings of tooled bindings, and card indexes. A large part of the information can be accessed through a database.

The Anton Abraham Cense (1901-1977) archive consists of personal documents and manuscripts. The archive is mainly concerned with the languages, history and culture of South Celebes. The archive also comprises the collection of Noeroeddin Daeng Magassing (1870-1943). This material is also related to the above mentioned region.

C.F.M. de Grijs studeerde Chinees in Leiden en Amoy (Xiamen) in 1857-1863. Hij werkte als tolk/vertaler, onder meer in 1863 in Tientsin (Tianjin) en van 1865 tot 1885 in Semarang (Java). Zijn papieren omvatten onder meer manuscript vertalingen van het Wetboek van de Qing dynastie, de Yinguo shilu, brieven en documenten over het Verdrag van Tientsin van 1863.

C.F.M. de Grijs studied Chinese in Leiden and Amoy (Xiamen) in 1857-1863. He worked as an interpreter and translator a.o. in 1863 in Tientsin (Tianjin) and from 1863 until 1885 in Semarang (Java). His papers include manuscript translations of the Qing Code, the Yinguo shilu, letters and documents concerning the Treaty of 1863.

Collection of documents from or gathered by Theodoor Paul Galestin (1907-1980), professor in archaeology and art history of South and South-East Asia in Leiden, primarily with materials from Indonesia: copies of Javanese and Balinese manuscripts, prints, photographs, drawings and graphic materials. Especially noteworthy are the letters and drawings of the painter and musician Walter Spies, a collection of photographs by, amongst others, Woodbury and Page and by Isidore van Kinsbergen, and the documentation on modern Indonesian painting in Java and Bali.

Het overgrote merendeel van de collectie werd aangeschaft voor rekening van de Universiteit tijdens Golius' verblijf in Aleppo en Istanbul in 1626-1629.

J.J. Hoffmann studied Chinese and Japanese from 1830, became government translator of Japanese in 1846, and titular professor of Japanese and Chinese in Leiden in 1855. His papers comprise his manuscript Japanese dictionary and other manuscripts, Chinese kongsi letters from Borneo, and offprints of his publications.

De bibliotheek van de Koninklijke Akademie Delft, afdeling Nederlandse Koloniën, werd overgebracht naar de Universiteitsbibliotheek Leiden na de opheffing van de Akademie in 1864. Naast gedrukte werken omvat de collectie hoofdzakelijk handschriften en diplomatische documenten in het Maleis en Javaans verzameld ter ondersteuning van de opleiding van bestuursamtbenaren voor de dienst in Nederlands-Indië en voor hun docenten. Het archief en collectie H.G. baron Nahuys van Burgst (1782-1858) behoort eveneens tot deze collectie.

The library of the Delft Royal Academy, section Dutch Colonies, was transferred to Leiden University Library after the closure of the Academy in 1864. Besides printed materials, the collection contains manuscripts and diplomatic documents predominantly in Malay and Javanese, brought together as educational tools for the aspirant civil servants for the Dutch East Indies and their teachers. The archive and collection H.G. baron Nahuys van Burgst (1782-1858) is also part of this collection.

Deze verzameling van 40 Mandsjoe boeken en handschriften, 5 Mongoolse boeken en 5 Keizerlijke of Presidentiele decreten voor verdienstelijke ambtenaren is afkomstig van zeven negentiende eeuwse geleerden. De helft van de Mandsjoe boeken betreft taalkundige werken; verder zijn er veel vertalingen van Chinese klassieken en fictie. Vooral bijzonder zijn de Mandsjoe vertaling van de roman Jin Ping Mei en de raadgevingen van de Qianlong en Jiaqing Keizers.

This collection of 40 Manchu books and manuscripts, 5 Mongolian books and 5 Imperial or Presidential Decrees for distinguished officials originates mostly from seven nineteenth-century scholars. Half of the Manchu books are linguistic works; there are also many translations of Chinese classics and fiction. Special mention deserve the Manchu translation of the Jin Ping Mei and the admonitions of the Qianglong and Jiaqing emperors.
