Omvangrijke collectie foto’s, negatieven, dia’s, contactafdrukken en archivalia van de Nederlandse fotograaf Henri Berssenbrugge (1873-1959). Als picturalist was hij vermaard om zijn beheersing en verfijnd toepassen van nagenoeg alle fotografische procedés die in zijn tijd gangbaar waren. Later had zijn werk meer raakvlakken met achtereenvolgens het symbolisme en het modernisme.

Sizeable collection of photos, negatives, slides, contact prints and papers of the Dutch photographer Henri Berssenbrugge (1873-1959). As a pictorialist, he was famous for his mastery and his refined application of almost all photographical processes that were in vogue in his times. Later, his work had more in common with, successively, symbolism and modernism.

Collectie van honderden foto’s en enkele albums, negatieven, tekeningen en een camera van de Nederlandse impressionistische schilder George Hendrik Breitner. Breitner gebruikte foto’s als studiemateriaal voor zijn schilderijen. Hij onderzocht de artistieke mogelijkheden van fotografie in genres en thema’s als portret, naakt, Amsterdamse stadsgezichten en cavalerie. Deze collectie bereikte Universiteit Leiden via de schilder K. Maks en verzamelaar A. Osterholt.

Collection of hundreds of photographs and some albums, negatives, drawings and one camera of the Dutch impressionist painter George Hendrik Breitner. Breitner used photography as study material for his paintings, and explored the artistic potency in it in popular genres and themes like portraits, nudes, Amsterdam street views and cavalry. This collection reached Leiden University through painter K. Maks and collector A. Osterholt.

Collectie van voornamelijk kunstfoto’s door de Amsterdamse fotograaf Bernard Eilers (1878-1951). Thema’s in Eilers’ foto’s lopen uiteen van portretten en stillevens tot stadsgezichten. In opdracht maakte hij ook reclamefotografie en reproductiefotografie. Hij maakte bijvoorbeeld in opdracht reproducties van schilderijen in de collectie van het Rijksmuseum. In zijn picturalistische streven naar de erkenning van fotografie als kunstvorm, produceerde Eilers niet alleen zelf hoge kwaliteit fotografie. Hij had ook een leidende rol in fotografennetwerken en -verenigingen.

Collection of mostly art photographs by the Amsterdam based reproduction and art photographer Bernard Eilers (1878-1951). Themes in Eilers’ photographs vary from portraits to still lifes, cityscapes. He also made advertisement photography on commission. In his pictorialist strive for acknowledgement of photography as an art form, Eilers did not only make high quality photography himself, but also took a leading role in photographers’ networks and associations.

Collectie van honderden negatieven, albums met contactafdrukken van de negatieven en dia’s van de Nederlandse schilder Willem Witsen (1860-1923). Het merendeel bestaat uit portretten van zijn naasten en vrienden en opnamen die hij in zijn dagelijkse omgeving maakte.

Collection of hundreds of negatives and black-and-white transparencies and six albums with contact prints of the negatives, made by the Dutch painter Willem Witsen (1860-1923). The majority exists of portraits of next-of-kin and friends and photographs he made in his daily environment.
